Live365: Internet Radio Revolution
by Nathan Segal
November 27, 2001

Live365 bills itself as “The world's largest network of independently-produced audio content,” with access to over 30,000 active stations, originating from 70 countries and heard by listeners in over 100 countries. Programming is available in numerous genres, consisting of music, talk and news.

The Live365 Directory Service supports navigation by genre and user supplied keyword searches. It lists individuals, commercial and public radio stations and more. Other features include Internet connection speed filtering, presets, ordering and sorting. The preset function is similar to the preset on a car radio, which allows listeners to select and save stations, so that they can be easily found again in the future. Each directory contains the station description, DJ name, genre(s) and statistics. Clicking on a directory launches the station play list window and connects the user to the broadcast server. Directories are snapshots of active broadcast databases (accurate only to within five minutes).

According to Live365 literature, radio is in the middle of a technological revolution, where Internet radio will transform the relationships between listeners, broadcasters, advertisers and artists and is likely to create a million station universe. As part of this revolution, individuals and groups will discover a global voice. The listener will have a wide range of programming choices, at home and through various wireless devices, such as PDA’s and cell phones. A few of the companies that will be supplying these services and devices include Nokia, AOL, Samsung, Vodaphone, Sony, 3Com, Palm and more. The Live365 technology will make it possible for anyone with a computer and Internet connection to be heard from anywhere in the world.

According to estimates by Forrester Research, "41% of US consumers - 118 millon people, will listent to personalized, on-demand audio content at least once a week. This figure does not include a vast overseas audience that will routinely acces Internet radio via both wired and wireless devices."

To listen to any Live365 Internet radio broadcast, listeners are advised to download Player 365, which enables any browser to play Live365 audio. At 160 K it takes only seconds to download on a broadband connection, or few minutes with a modem connection. Player365 includes an automatic reconnection to the user’s stream if the Internet connection is temporarily lost and an automatic proxy negotiation feature to help users behind firewalls or proxy servers. Future versions will include double buffering, automatic connection speed monitoring, etc.

Note: While other players are supported by Live365, Player365 provides the best results of Live365 broadcasts.
